Two DDI Workshops: Training and Longitudinal Data, October, Dagstuhl, Germany

Training Workshop: Using DDI 3 to Support Production, Management, Dissemination, and Preservation Systems for Data in the Social Sciences and Economics

The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) has produced an international XML standard for the use of lifecycle information about social, behavioral, and economics science data that informs the broad set of disciplines addressed in the social sciences. DDI facilitates the automation of documentation and production systems for the delivery of this data. This workshop is geared toward the staff of data producing agencies and archives. The five-day structure of this workshop provides the participants with an opportunity for in-depth assistance on the specialized features of DDI that are important to their organization’s activities.

New features in DDI 3 support:
- metadata capture from planning and production to dissemination and analysis
- reuse of metadata to drive subsequent production or analysis processes
- ISO 11179 compliant data registries such as question, variable, and concept banks
- grouping of study series for longitudinal and comparative research
- capturing comparative information for the creation of harmonized data
- improved capture of archival information for data organization and management

Expert Workshop: DDI, Managing Metadata for Longitudinal Data - Best Practices

This symposium-style workshop will bring together representatives from major longitudinal data collection efforts to share expertise and to explore the use of the DDI metadata standard as a means of managing and structuring longitudinal study documentation. Participants will work collaboratively to create best practices for documenting longitudinal data in its various forms, including panel data and repeated cross-sections.

Longitudinal survey data carry special challenges related to documenting and managing data over time, over geography, and across multiple languages. This complexity is often a barrier to building efficient systems for data access and analysis. The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI), a metadata standard that addresses the full life cycle of social science research data, is designed to provide an efficient structure for the documentation of complex longitudinal data. In this workshop, participants involved in longitudinal data projects around the world will work together on issues involved in documenting longitudinal data.
